Research Topics!
We do the research and development (R&D) for the future space systems such as space robots, space exploration rovers, solar power satellites, inflatable structures, etc. We also study on the autonomous and intelligent systems for advanced mission requirements.

From the left side of the top figure,
(1) Autonomous space structure assembly by the experimental model that simulates a space robot performing extravehicular activity (EVA) in place of an astronaut.
(2) R&D on future inflatable structures, ultimate light weight structures, and its experimental verifications in the micro-gravity environment using aircraft parabolic flights. System designing of solar power satellites to be prepared for the global warming and energy crisis, where subjects are analysis and control of deformation and vibration of the large flexible structures.
(3) Simulations and experiments of flapping butterflies to understand motion intelligence of animals.
(4) Space exploration rover mimicking an ant that can climb over obstacles flexibly. Biped robot.

We try to understand dynamics of the space systems, examples of mechanical systems, for better control methods. We try making the systems be intelligent by applying the obtained knowledge such as information processing and motion control method by the brain and nervous system when humans or animals move. The objective of the researchs is “the control and intelligence for the space systems and the mechanical systems by understanding their dynamics and applying the knowledge of animals’ motion intelligence.” More information about our researches is here.

Guiding Principle!
The basis of the aerospace systems are various studies and technologies such as mechanical engineering, control engineering, structural engineering, dynamics, etc. The research guidance is done in this laboratory emphasizing the dynamics, the control, the structure, the system, and the information in order to realize the future space systems such as the space robots, space exploration rovers, the inflatable structures, etc. This laboratory places emphasis on hardware experiments for educational efficiency and reality of researches. The graduated students are active in various fields not only the aerospace but also the machine, electricity, information, etc. because students have an opportunity to learn actively many basis.

Cooperation and Collaboration!
Our laboratory is associated with many companies and organizations such as JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, formore NASDA and ISAS), foundations relating Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, etc. Moreover, the researches have been advanced jointly with various off-campus companies and laboratories. We also collaborate with many laboratories such as the measurement and control, the robotics, the structure, the bionic design, the fluid dynamics laboratories and so on.
